Ian Wright has criticised Manchester United’s transfer strategy and says the signing of Edinson Cavani sums up their scattergun approach of ‘plugging gaps’ rather than signing stars.
The Red Devils endured a frustrating summer transfer window, failing in their pursuit of Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho before a frantic deadline day full of last-minute deals. Chief among them was Cavani, who had been a free agent for months before moving to Old Trafford, while they also signed youngsters Facundo Pellistri and Amad Traore.
‘When you look back, you can go as far back as Henrik Larsson, they bring in that kind of maverick forward just to kind of plug gaps,’ he said on the Kelly & Wrighty Show. ‘You’ve got Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Radamel Falcao, now they’ve got Ighalo even and Cavani.
